Skookumchuck Rapids on the Sunshine Coast

Skookumchuck Rapids (also known as Sechelt Rapids:

As with many other fantastic dive areas in British Columbia, the Sunshine Coast offers great visibility year round, plenty of interesting and colorful marine life, sheltered bays for year round diving, lots of shore and boat dives, and great Sunshine Coast dive equipment stores and Sunshine Coast Skookumchuck Rapids dive charter operators.

One of the favorite dives in the area is at Skookumchuck Narrows (which means strong waters), which is a narrow, shallow passage that separates the Sechelt Peninsula and the mainland.

This is a fantastic drift dive for properly trained and experienced divers, where currents of up to 16 knots can whisk you past some incredible, colorful underwater scenery.

The currents bring in lots of nutrients and oxygen, which as we already know makes for some great conditions for marine life.

You can expect to see floors covered with multi-colored anemones, sea stars, hydroids, giant barnacles, and sponges, along with lots of rock fish, kelp greenlings, Puget Sound king crabs, nudibranch, sunflower stars, Giant ling cod, cabezon, and much more.

Before diving anywhere, I suggest you talk with an experienced local dive shop in the area you wish to dive, and ensure they know your experience level and the local tide schedule.

Skookumchuck Narrows is another dive that must be done at slack tide due to the strong currents.

When possible, dive with a group, and always dive with a buddy.

Skookumchuck Rapids - Where to Stay?

If you want a great place to stay that is centrally located to the Rapids and many other Sunshine Coast dive sites, I suggest you consider the Sunshine Coast Resort.

Book your dive holiday through CoolDives.com in prime diving season for three nights or more and receive your fourth night free.

Please remember to return and complete a dive review for the benefit of other divers.
