Former HMCS Annapolis Marine Life Survey

An Annapolis Marine Life Survey is now underway following the successful sinking of the former HMCS Annapolis.

This was all part of the original plan of the Artificial Reef Society of British Columbia (ARSBC) who wanted an artificial reef close to Vancouver so they easily could monitor the development of marine life on this new wreck.

The ARSBC is now asking for help from the diving community who will hopefully become the main and most current source of information for the ABIS study.

It is also hoped that Vancouver dive charter operators and local dive shops will help by promoting this program during their pre-dive briefings and otherwise sharing the details of this study.

Divers, underwater photographers and videographers are asked to help this important project by sending in pictures and videos whenever possible.

Book a dive charter to the Annapolis, check out all the marine life moving in already and help monitor the progress.

Dive Charters to the Annapolis near Vancouver

Dive charters to the former HMCS Annapolis are available from Vancouver/Howe Sound or Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast.

On Sunday April 4, 2015, after 7 long years of hard work to sink and not to sink the Annapolis, the former 366 foot destroyer, HMCS Annapolis, sank perfectly in Halkett Bay near Vancouver, British Columbia.

She settled almost perfectly upright some 30 meters below the surface, in an idyllic, sheltered bay which was basically void of life on the bottom due to years of bark and other debris covering it.

And now experienced scuba divers, from recreational to expert, can enjoy another of our many wonderful natural and artificial wreck dives in British Columbia!

Many extras were included by the ARSBC for this wreck and are awaiting discovery. In addition, many openings have been cut in the side and numerous open doors and bulkhead holes have been cut to allow penetration and easy exits for experienced and trained divers.

DO NOT penetrate without proper training for your safety!!

The maximum depth is at about 30 meters, but there is also plenty to see at the 20 to 25 meter range – perfect for experienced and certified open water divers.

Visit cooldives.com to learn more about the Annapolis and to organize your group charters to the Annapolis.

Be Cool and be Bold - Dive Cold near Vancouver and enjoy the Annapolis.

ANNAPOLIS PROJECT- COURT HEARING DECISION

Dear Friends, Volunteers and Supporters,

As previously reported, a Federal Court hearing was held on February 25 and 26, 2015 regarding the ARSBC’s Disposal at Sea Permit issued by Environment Canada in October 2014. The Disposal at Sea Permit authorizes the ARSBC to sink the Annapolis at Halkett Bay, Gambier Island. Some residents of Halkett Bay filed an application asking the Court to overturn the Disposal at Sea Permit.

We are pleased to announce that the Federal Court has upheld the Disposal at Sea Permit and lifted the Court injunction that was previously put in place. We anticipate that the Court decision will be available from the Federal Court of Canada’s website shortly.

We are thrilled with the outcome and we look forward to completing the project. We will keep you updated on the status of the project.

Thank you,

Rick Wall, Director

Annapolis Not Sinking Without A Final Gasp

Delayed by the courts - the Annapolis won't be sunk near Vancouver this weekend as planned.

Hopefully one last gasp from these people - who all have anti-algae paint on the bottom of their yachts.

There is so much life on BC's other artificial reefs that this argument holds no merit.

We can't wait to see the new habitat that this ship will soon build in her next life.

Volunteers needed for prep work on the Annapolis

Annapolis getting closer - volunteer call-out from the ARSBC!

Hello Volunteers,

We are looking for people to come out to the Annapolis on Saturday to do some "housekeeping". We need to move some small piles of metal to a central location and a few other tasks.

It would be fantastic to get 8-10 people out and we could get everything done and there won't be many more opportunities to get a look at her before she goes down!!

So let them know asap if you can come.

Email to cooldives@shaw.ca if you can help out and we'll get you in touch with the organizers.

Annapolis on verge of getting sunk

The latest update......great news from the ARSBC on the sinking of the Annapolis:

Dear Friends, Volunteers and Supporters,

On our last update, we wrote to inform you that on November 4, 2014, the arrest of Annapolis actioned by Wes Roots of WR Marine Services had been overturned by the Federal Court thereby releasing the project from further risks of delay. We also advised that the work ofpreparing the ship before sinking is now the focus and that we would be renewing our call foryour volunteer help in the days and weeks to come.

In recent weeks, the Reef Society has carefully planned and is working with regional marineoperators and other individuals providing their professional skills, time and equipment in the next step of project operations.

On November 22, an important task was accomplished when 40 tonsof concrete anchors were strategically placed in deep water as part of the anchoring system in Halkett Bay Provincial Marine Park.

The shore line rocks within the Bay will soon be drilled to set heavy duty anchor pins in readiness for when the ship is towed over to the sink site.

We will soon post pictures on our web site of the activities that took place.

Full scale operations in Long Bay are set to begin on December 1, and will be professionally organized.

The project remains under Work Safe BC regulations. We plan to maximize our time on site by having a full facility live aboard support vessel tied to the ship. This will allow for up to 8 persons to overnight in comfort as long as needed. With crews on station daily we expect to ready the ship on a timely basis with your help.

The Society is asking for your help. Anyone who may be available during weekdays can contact me directly. Transportation will be worked out and we will provide the rest.

The first full and open volunteer call is for December 6 and will continue weekly. The scope of work is organizing the decks, collecting residual metals for recycling, preparing diver signage, banners, and assisting on other tasks as directed. With your renewed energy and commitment to the project we can all look forward to a very happy and successful project end.

We will continue to provide updates on our progress so that we can determine a sink date in the New Year. Please advise if you are available during the week and we will provide all the details.

We look forward to seeing the volunteer team back aboard Annapolis soon.

As always, if you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact us directly. Thank you, Rick Wall, Director

The Annapolis is yet another step closer as another permit has been issued. However the battle for the ship goes on as detailed in the ARSBC press release below:

Dear Friends, Volunteers and Supporters,

The Save the Halkett Bay Marine Park Society has filed a petition in court to challenge the ARSBC’s park use permit from the Province. The Province and the ARSBC are both named as respondents in the petition.

The ARSBC is confident of its position to have the park use permit upheld. The concerns that are raised in the petition have already been addressed with the Ministry staff and Park officials. We are taking steps to address the petition. As always, if you would like more information please do not hesitate to contact us directly.

April 3, 2014

ANNAPOLIS PROJECT STATUS UPDATE

Dear Friends, Volunteers and Supporters,

We are pleased to let you know that the Federal Government has awarded a service contract to Jenkins Marine Limited for certain remediation work to be performed on the Annapolis.

This is a significant step forward. This phase of the Project will be under the supervision of the Government of Canada.

The ARSBC expects to visit the Annapolis sometime next week with the contractor and representatives of the Government of Canada in order to learn more about the plan for completing the remediation work.

We are hopeful that the contractor will be in a position to begin the remediation work in the next week or so.

We will provide an update on anticipated timelines once we have more information.

Access to the ship is prohibited during this phase of the project. Volunteer work, and access to the ship, is suspended until the contractor work is complete.

We anticipate that volunteers will be able to resume making final preparations once the contractor has finished its work.

As indicated, we will provide updates as things move forward.

Annapolis Sinking Meeting Planned - Feb 26 Update

Dear Friends, Volunteers and Supporters,

Now that we have engaged the federal government to assist in the remediation of the ship we have turned a critical corner in the history of this project.

In doing so, it has allowed us to define and identify what next steps we can take together to plan out the remaining tasks and operations that will lead us to sinking the ship this summer.

We would like to share our ideas with you in an information session on March 6, 2014 at 7:00 pm at the Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Please help us spread this invitation.

A short power point presentation will be provided which we hope will be informative to you. Following this presentation, Doug Biffard from the Provincial Ministry of Environment will discuss a new initiative that will involve citizen based science incooperation with our dive community.

Project A.B.I.S. (Annapolis Biological Impact Study) is an ARSBC initiative that will monitor the changes that will occur over the years as the ship provides habitat for generations of marine life. Doug will provide on outline on the ideas and plans of this study and ways in which you can be involved.

This will be an opportunity to learn more about our plans and to get your feedback through a question and answer session following the presentations.

We look forward to seeing you,Thank you,

Rick Wall,

ASRBC Director.

Annapolis Getting Closer To Sinking - Update

February 14, 2014

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The ARSBC has had high level discussions with government authorities regarding options for completing important remediation work to the ship necessary to address certain environmental concerns with the project.

Steps are now being taken to engage a contractor to complete this work. A timeline for completing this work has not been finalized, however, we are hopeful that a detailed timeline will be established in the near future. Once details regarding the remediation work are finalized, we anticipate calling an information meeting to discuss progress to date and next steps to complete the project as efficiently as possible.

We are committed to completing the project. We would like to thank everybody who has participated in this project for your contributions.

Together, we will succeed!

As always, we invite anybody wanting more information regarding the status of the project to contact the ARSBC directly.

Save the weekend to see our mermaid!

Plans are underway for the 25th Anniversary Party for the Emerald Princess underwater sculpture near Powell River on the Sunshine Coast.

The Emerald Princess is a beautiful 3 meter (10 foot) high bronze mermaid sculpture designed by famous British Columbia artist & sculptor Simon Morris, sunk at a depth of around 20 meters (60 feet).

Simon was commissioned in 1986 to create this nine-foot tall bronze statue of a mermaid to be placed near Powell River, British Columbia.

Accessible to most certified divers, the Emerald Princess mermaid has become a world famous icon and attracts divers from around the globe.

More details will be published soon on this Cooldives.com page, including the discounted accommodation rates at the Beach Gardens Resort who were also a big part of the project 25 years ago.

The preliminary party date is the March 15/16 weekend (Emerald Princess celebration at the same time as St. Paddy’s day – how appropriate!).

Annapolis Sinking in Howe Sound Update

Thanks to the ARSBC for this Annapolis sinking update...and good luck!

December 13, 2013

Dear Friends and Supporters,

As we have communicated in previous updates, the ARSBC team has been actively communicating with the Department of National Defense (DND) and other federal agencies to find a solution to our problem of obtaining federal support in order for us to complete the ship as an artificial reef for Halkett Bay in Howe Sound. We promised to provide you with relevant updates on our activities which we can share.

DND plans to conduct a second and more in-depth and detailed review of the physical condition of the ship. This review will focus on taking measurements of the hull plate thickness, assessing any points of weakness, as well as the use of commercial dive teams to inspect the condition of the hull. The Navy will be conducting the operation with ARSBC in attendance.

We understand that this is to take place on Dec 18-21. We are pleased that this action is being taken which we anticipate will provide additional relevant data so that some decision can be made in order for the project to continue to become an artificial reef.

Thank you,

Howard Robins President

Annapolis Sinking Near Vancouver Update

Dear Friends and Supporters,

This is a brief update on the status of the Annapolis project.

The ARSBC Board has continued to maintain an open dialogue with officials at both the federal and provincial levels of government. We appreciate that it may appear as though things are not moving forward. However, the ARSBC is making every effort to proceed with completing the remediation work that is necessary to obtain final approval to sink the vessel as an artificial reef. The nature and extent of the work that is needed requires the assistance of government. We are in ongoing discussions with the responsible officials and we are awaiting formal responses.

The urgency to complete the Annapolis project is well understood by the government officials that are now working with us. We are advised that the federal government is reviewing options and will follow-up with the ARSBC shortly.

It should also be understood that government action can slow down during these summer holiday months and we suspect that this is why we have not received an options analysis to date. The good news is that the project still has the full support of the Provincial Parks Branch to accept the ship as a donation. The Provincial Parks Branch also recognizes the personal efforts made by individuals of the ARSBC in cooperation with scores of volunteers and project sponsors. The successful completion of the Annapolis project is an important matter for the Parks Branch and our friends with the Squamish Nation.

Please contact us if you have any questions, comments or suggestions. We will provide further updates on any new developments. Thank you for your continued support, it’s appreciated.

Howie RobinsPresident, ARSBC
